Upon arrival to the hotel, the tour leader will explain your itinerary for the trip. This is a free day to explore Málaga—a city on the coast with beautiful beaches and excellent weather all year long. This makes the city an ideal place to explore by foot and truly appreciate its beautiful historical quarters, the Alcazaba (a 11th century palatial fortification from Arab times), and the many tapas bars in the old town. Some of the best museums in Andalusia can be found in Málaga: the Museo Picasso, the Centre Pompidou, or the Museo Carmen Thyssen are certainly worth a visit.
From Málaga you’ll head to the Cádiz province to start our “Ruta del Toro”. Discover the towns on Alcornocales Natural Park, a large cork oak forest. Learn about the bullfighting industry and how bulls are reared by visiting a farm and seeing the meadows where they roam. In the afternoon you’ll go to Sanlúcar de Barrameda, a beautiful town by the estuary of the Guadalquivir River. Its architecture is evidence of its rich past, with many palaces and noble houses. Sanlúcar is known for its wine culture, so there’ll be time to enjoy dinner and go tavern-hopping to taste its prized manzanilla wine.
Early in the morning you’ll cross the Guadalquivir River towards the marshes in Doñana National Park. You’ll get to experience the park by boat but also by jeep, and perhaps you’ll get to see one of the Iberian lynx that live in the area. Doñana is a bird-watchers paradise, and has an extraordinary biodiversity. Enjoy a lunch break in Sanlúcar de Barrameda—where seafood and fried fish are king—a town between a river and the Atlantic Ocean. After lunch it’s time for Cádiz, a city with lots of history and interesting architecture reminiscent of La Habana, which was built following this style. Enjoy pescaito frito and good wine and wander through its historical old town.
This is a day to enjoy the sun and beaches on Andalusia’s stunning Atlantic coast. First, you’ll visit Conil de la Frontera, one of the prettiest towns on the coast of Cádiz, with a strong Arab past. There you can have lunch and taste the local fried fish specialties while enjoying its never-ending beaches. In the afternoon you’ll head to Bolonia Beach, which has a giant dune that’s been protected for its environmental value. The Roman ruins of Baelo Claudia are also in this area. The evening will be spent in Tarifa, where you’ll settle for the night and enjoy this prime surfer spot with an Arab feel, ancient city walls and plenty of good vibes!
You’ll get on the ferry and cross the Gibraltar Strait. In only thirty minutes you’ll reach the coast of Africa and disembark in Tangier. You’ll get settled in the city at our lodging near the medina. After a visit to the medina and the kasbah, there’ll be a lunch break. This will leave the afternoon open to enjoy the old town or the city’s beaches, right on the other side of the Mediterranean. Tangier’s medina sits high in the city, overlooking the European coast. Stroll by its numerous cafes and take in the essence of “the big capital of the north”, a cosmopolitan city with a unique flavor.
In the morning, you’ll travel to the town of Asilah, known as “the artists’ town”. Its placement, streets, and atmosphere are reminiscent of Spain’s Tarifa and Conil de la Frontera. Asilah is a cultural centre and hosts many artists from around the world during its mural-painting festival. You can stroll around its medina and enjoy the many murals and decorated walls. Spend a quiet day taking in the beauty of this fortified town, its delicious food, and the town’s beach. Get inspired by this coastal town, its mix of cultures and undeniable artistic character.
Early in the morning, you’ll go to the city of Tetouan, where its Spanish and Andalusian past can still be witnessed in the colonial architecture. However, its medina remains intact since the Middle Ages, and has been declared a UNESCO’s Heritage Site. You’ll visit the medina to explore its daily life and the different artisan neighbourhoods that have been around for hundreds of years, using the same techniques and performing the same jobs. After lunch, you’ll go into the Rif Mountains and visit Chefchaouen, located on top of the range. Its architecture will remind us of the towns we visited in Andalusia. You’ll have a free afternoon to wander through its shops and the medina, where you’ll spend the night.
The imperial city of Fez is as well Morocco’s cultural centre, which used to be the capital of the Idrisid dynasty. Fez has the oldest university in the world, the University of al-Qarawiyyin, and a pedestrian old town worth exploring in detail. You’ll do a guided tour of its medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and wander throughout its different neighbourhoods. Learn about traditional guilds, and about the artisanal leather tanneries. Have fun exploring this interesting city on your own as well, and end the day relaxing at a traditional riad in the medina.
This final day of the tour is a free day to get to know Fez a bit further. There will be transfers to the airport arranged according to flight schedules, and plenty to explore in the city if you have time before your departure!
