This multi-adventure will take you into the heart of Translyvania, to trek across rolling meadows, thick forests and rock plateaus in search of some of the most inspirational views you’ll find in the whole of Europe. We’ll go canyoning in deep river-cut gorges and explore waterfalls and caves - including entrances to a 3,800 metre cave system that’s regarded as one of Romania’s must-see natural wonders.

Welcome to Romania! You’ll arrive either at Oradea or Cluj-Napoca airports, where we’ll be waiting to transfer you to the Suncuius - Vadu Crisului area, a region of outstanding natural beauty comprised of green hillsides and rugged cliffs dotted with caves, many of them explorable. Here your guide for the week will give you a presentation about the area, and you’ll go through a detailed itinerary of the week’s activities, and if there’s enough time left in the day, take a short, easy trek. Afterwards, you’ll grab dinner and spend your first night in Transylvania in local accommodation.

Activity: Night in Transylvania
Arrival & Night: stay in Suncuius – Vadu Crisului area.

Today the walking begins - and so does the climbing. You’ll head out through the area’s most spectacular (and easiest & most accessible) climbing route, up the slopes of the surrounding cliffs and a steep rocky slope called the Fairy’s Wall, using a via ferrata (“iron path”), a steel-cabled route with metal rungs. Your destination is the Vadu Crisuliu waterfall, and from here, you’ll have a choice - to continue up a more demanding via ferrata, or to take a much less strenuous route back. Once you arrive back at your accommodation, you’ll transfer to the mountain village area of Rosia, the site of archaeological evidence of mining going back to the Stone Age. This historic site of national importance will be our home for the night.

Activity : Trekking and Via Ferrata
Night: Accommodation in Rosia.

Today you dive underground for the first time. After breakfast you’ll take a car from Rosia to the entrance of either Old Man’s Cave or Grueti Cave (we’ll make our choice depending on the needs of the group and what the weather is doing). Each of these deep caves features galleries and straits, running water, vast underground rock formations and a variety of cave fauna. After six hours of exploring the caves and the gorgeous villages in the surrounding area, you'll head back to Rosia for a well-earned night’s sleep.

Activity: Caving
Night: Accommodation in Rosia.

The day starts with a car ride from Rosia to Boga, the entrance area for Oselu Canyon, one of four deep rifts in the surrounding national parkland. Today, you’ll climb into your wetsuit and dive right in, wading and abseiling your way through this fascinating and dramatic geological feature carved deep into the surrounding rock. After negotiating your way across drops and through rapids for half the day, you’ll decant at the other side and head towards your nearby bed for the night.

Activity: Canyoning
Night: Accommodation Padis-Boga area

Today you’ll head deep into the Apuseni Natural Park, a huge, picturesque expanse of gently rolling forested meadows overlying a stunningly beautiful karst landscape of weathered rocky outcrops and cliff faces. Your long walking route today takes you to the park’s most beautiful spots, starting with traversing the Gravoi and Ponor meadows, including resting your feet by a ground spring. From here, you’ll climb to higher ground, then descend to the biggest cave entrance in Romania, the mighty Cetatile Ponorului. Discovered in 1886, this enormous underground fortress of rock is nearly 4km long, and conditions will dictate how far you venture into its increasingly watery depths. After exploring a number of entrances to the cave, you’ll continue the hike until you’re on some of the highest ground in the area, able to admire the immensity of this karstic landscape. From here, it’s a long circle back home and a nicely weary night’s sleep.

Activity: Trekking
Night: Accommodation in Padis - Boga area.

After a final goodbye breakfast and a debriefing from the trip, you’ll be transferred to the airport to catch your flight home.
