Activity Level

Visit some of the highest and most beautiful parts of continental Spain, by canyoning along the cool green waters of the Rio Verde before taking to the hills and trekking high into the Sierra Nevada, underneath the highest mountains in the whole of Spain. Relax in the white villages of the Alpujarra region - and explore Malaga, a recently rejuvenated city with a thriving art & food scene.

You’ll start the adventure on the outskirts of historic Malaga, meeting at the airport, before driving through the beautiful Costa Tropical landscape to where you’ll have lunch. From here, you’ll either head down to the sun-kissed coastal resort town of Almuñecar and stay there overnight, or climb into the hills above Almuñecar to stay at accommodation in the scenic mountain village of Otivar, along the ancient road called Sospiro de los Moros (“sigh of the Moors”) that connects Almuñecar with Granada, 80 kilometres to the north.

You’ll have plenty of time to meet your fellow travellers, introduce yourselves and learn exactly how the tour’s going to work over the next few days.

Night: Hotel in Almuñecar or Otivar

Today is canyoning day! You’ll start with an early breakfast in beautiful Almuñecar, followed by a 2-hour drive to the end of the Rio Verde canyon. You’ll get your first sight of the sunlit green waters, deep rock pools and thundering waterfalls of this exceptionally beautiful (and understandably popular) part of Andalusia, your home for the rest of the day. Activities will include rappelling and swimming, and jumps and slides will be optional. All equipment will be provided and training given in situ.

After a long, exciting day of climbing, scrambling and splashing around, you’ll make your way to the scenic village of Capileira, deep in the picturesque Alpujarras region on the southern slopes of the Sierra Nevada, where you’ll have dinner and spend the night.

Canyoning Experience: 6 - 8 hours.
Night: Hotel in Alpujarras

Today you take to the mountains. After breakfast at your hotel in Capileira, you’ll transfer to Hoya del Portillo, at 2,200 metres above sea level. From there, your route is as follows: to Alto del Chorrillo o Mirador de Trevélez (2.700 metres); to Siete Lagunas (2900 metres), an area of lakes and green meadows with spectacular views of Mulhacén (Spain’s highest peak) and Alcazaba; then to Piedra El Yunque (2.850 metres), Rio Goterón y Juntillas, Cortijo del Horcajo (2180 metres) and finally a descent into the valley of Trevélez, where you’ll be spending the night.

Your accommodation is a cortijo (traditional cottage, with stylistic roots stretching back to the Roman villa). The cortijo Horcajo in Trevélez is an ancient property where one of the most ancient cow farmers from Trevélez used to live, and its owner is letting us sleep inside with mattresses, mats and sleeping bags - but if it’s a spectacularly clear night and you’d prefer to sleep out under the stars, we can set up a bivouac for you outside!

Trekking: 6 - 7 hours.
Night: Traditional cortijo or bivouac.

After breakfast, you’ll say sad farewells to the cortijo Horcajo and take a leisurely stroll down the valley into the town that gives it its name - Trevélez. This beautiful settlement of whitewashed buildings in the traditional Alpujarras style is one of Europe’s highest towns above sea level (1,486 metres). It’s famous for the quality of its air-cured hams, and you’ll take a look at them up close with a visit to one of the ham-drying rooms, before trying some of the locally-made sausages.

After exploring the town further, you’ll make our way to our nearby hotel, where you’ll have dinner and take it easy for the evening.

Trekking: 4 hours.
Night: Hotel in Trevélez

The Sierra Nevada is behind us - you can be transferred from Trevélez directly to Malaga airport or just to Malaga so you have the ancient city to explore. Depending on your flight times, you’ll be able to make your own way round this energetic and vibrant city, the gateway of the Costa del Sol - it’s 2,800 years old, but is currently enjoying a new lease of life thanks to various reconstruction programmes and heavy investment in the arts & culture scene. Visit the port, the shopping precinct, the cathedral, or the famous Automobile & Fashion Museum. Explore its history with visits to the Gibralfaro Castle, the Alcazaba and the ancient Roman Theatre - or follow the footsteps of former resident Pablo Picasso.

Dine on some of the best seafood you’ll find in Spain - and sample Malaga’s signature sweet wine. Book a late flight and the day is yours - and so is the city.
